A Story Rooted in This Village
Christ Church has stood at the heart of Biddulph Moor since 1863: through the joys and sorrows, the celebrations and hardships that have shaped this community across generations. Our heritage is not just the story of a building, but of the people who built it, worshipped in it, and were shaped by it.
This section of our site is a living record of that history. We are actively researching and gathering stories, photographs and documents as part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project. If you have memories, photographs or information to share, we would love to hear from you.
A Timeline of Christ Church
From the laying of the first stone to the present day; the moments that have shaped our church and our village. This timeline grows as our research continues.
The School is Built
James Bateman of Biddulph Grange builds the village school - the building that would become our Church Hall.
Plans Approved
Plans designed by architect Cooke for the new church are passed.
Christ Church is Consecrated
Christ Church is consecrated with Rev. Francis Gordon as its first rector, built from local stone with an Italianate architectural design.
Rev. D Higham Sparling
Rev. Sparling serves the parish. Oil lamps light the church during this era.
First Photographic Record
Rev. Edwin Wheeldon presides over the first photographic record of the choir - 11 men and 14 boys.
Electric Lighting Installed
Under Rev. Frederick N Fletcher, electric lighting is installed at Christ Church.
Centenary Celebrations
Christ Church celebrates its centenary. The Bishop of Lichfield attends a confirmation service.
Remembrance Garden
The Lyche Gate and Remembrance Garden are built. A glass and aluminium screen is also erected inside the church.
Pipe Organ Replaced
The pipe organ is removed and replaced with a modern electronic organ.
150th Anniversary
Christ Church celebrates its 150th anniversary.
Covid-19 Pandemic
For the first time in the church history, Christ Church is closed to public worship from March 24th to July 4th 2020.
A Living Community
Under Rev. Darren Fraser, Christ Church continues to serve Biddulph Moor as a place of worship, community hub, and guardian of local heritage.
